Did you know that corporations convicted of federal crimes can spend freely to influence our elections?
We all know the sad truth that the Citizens United decision opened the floodgates for hundreds of millions in corporate spending to deluge local, state, and national elections.
But many don’t realize that some of the money flowing into our elections is coming directly from corporations that have been charged or found guilty of felonies and other criminal activity.
At a minimum, we should all agree that a corporation that has broken the law should be prohibited from trying to buy elections.

That’s why, until power is returned to the people by overturning Citizens United, Congressman Keith Ellison has introduced the Protect Democracy from Criminal Corporations Act to bar criminal corporations from participating in the election process.
Corporations with felony convictions, or which agreed to pay over $1 million to settle a felony charge, will be prohibited from donating to any candidate campaigns or PACs for 6 years.
Take BP, which paid billions in criminal fines from the Deepwater Horizon disaster but still donated $1 million to federal candidates after the explosion, furthering their environmentally destructive agenda.
Make no mistake about it, our democracy is drowning in a sea of corrupt and often untraceable corporate money. It’s time to take action.
